Preliminary SB 2042 Multiple Subject Credential Elementary

General Information

The Multiple Subjects teaching credential authorizes a holder to teach Multiple-Subject matter (self-contained) classes in preschool,
and Grades K-12.

STEP 1 of 3: Graduate School Admission, Cal Poly Pomona

Students must complete the CSU Graduate/Postbaccalaureate Application. Students apply on-line at www.csumentor.edu Admission to Cal Poly Pomona requires a minimum 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) in the last 90 quarter units attempted. Applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA university requirements for university admission may apply for Special Consideration. To apply for Special Consideration, the applicant must schedule an oral interview with the Teacher Education Department Chair, and submit a written statement at the time of interview, addressing reason(s) for special consideration.

STEP 2 of 3: Credential Program Application and Approval Process

  • Requires admission as a post-baccalaureate student to Cal Poly Pomona.
  • Requires attendance at a TED 105/405 Credential Orientation.
  • Requires submission of the Basic Credential Application Packet (BCAP) to the Credential Services Office in Building 5, Room 228.
  • The following Prerequisite Courses must be completed or in progress, the same quarter as the Basic Credential Application
    Packet (BCAP) is submitted:
    1. TED 105/405 – Introduction to Contemporary Schooling
    2. a. GED 500/500L – Foundations of Educational Computer Literacy
      b. GED 400/400L – Foundations of Educational Computer Literacy (for undergraduates only)
    3. TED 406 – Pedagogical Foundations
    4. TED 443 – Theory and Practice in Reading Education.
  • Notes:

    • When requesting substitution of equivalent courses from another institution, students must submit an EVALUATION/CLASS EQUIVALENCY Form with a copy of official transcripts and a copy of the catalog course description from the year the course was taken, to the Credential Services Office in Building 5, Room 228.
    • Applications will be accepted every quarter, provided the prerequisites are in progress or have been completed. See posted deadlines for each quarter in the Credential Services Office.

      Basic Credential Application Packet (BCAP) Requirements:

    • Grade Point Average (GPA): To apply to the program students must meet the required GPA of 2.67 overall, or 2.75 based on last 90 quarter units. If the GPA falls below the minimum requirement, an Exceptional Admission option is available. A written Exceptional Admission statement must be submitted which addresses:
        1. The circumstances that contributed to not meeting the GPA requirement
        2. Experiences in the field of education (completed since graduation from college)
        3. Your potential for success in the Teacher Education Program and
        4. Status of completing the subject matter requirement for Credential sought.
    • Interview: Contact the appropriate Multiple Subjects faculty advisor. The list can be obtained from the Credential Services Office. All interviews must be completed prior to the application deadline. Schedule an interview well in advance of the Basic Credential Application Packet (BCAP) deadline.
    • California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST): All applicants must submit proof of passage of CBEST by the BCAP deadline. Apply online at www.cbest.nesinc.com.
    • California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET): A passing score on all sections of the Multiple Subjects CSET Exam is required of each student. Subject matter competence by exam must be met to be eligible for BCAP. Apply online at www.cset.nesinc.com.
    • Field Experience: TED 405 – Introduction to Contemporary Schooling, TED 406 Pedagogical Foundations, TED 443 – Theory and Practice in Reading Education (20 hours each, 60 hours total)
    • BCAP Recommendation Forms: Two recommendations are required (forms are in the BCAP application booklet). One recommendation form (academic), must be completed by a university or college professor who has been your instructor. The second form (work experience) is to be completed by a professional who has directly observed you as a volunteer, or as an employee, in a K-12 school setting for a minimum of 20 hours.

    • Statement of Purpose: In a thoughtful, carefully edited statement: Discuss the personal and professional qualities you possess that will enable you to become an effective teacher in a multicultural classroom, and state your expectations of Cal Poly Pomona’s Teacher Education Program.
    • Certificate of Clearance (fingerprinting and current TB Test): A Character and Identification Clearance must be submitted as part of the application process. If you are a holder of an Emergency Permit or Substitute Permit in California, you may submit, in lieu of completing the Character and Identification Clearance packet, a copy of your
      Emergency Permit or Substitute Permit.
    • Affidavit for Certificate of Clearance: All BCAP applicants must submit the affidavit form provided by the Credential Services Office.
    • Processing Fee: A $25.00 credential application processing fee is required with the BCAP application or submitted to the cashier’s office. Check or money order only. Make check payable to: Cal Poly Pomona.

Course Requirements for Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential (63 Units Total)

Prerequisites

  • TED 405 – Introduction to Contemporary Schooling (20 hours observation) 4 Units
  • GED 500/500L, or GED 400/400L – Foundation of Educational Computer Literacy 3, 1 Units
  • TED 406 – Pedagogical Foundations (20 hours participation) 4 Units
  • TED 443 – Theory and Practice in Reading Education (20 hours observation) 4 Units
  • Subtotal: 16 Units

The following courses are restricted and can only be taken after successful application and approval into the credential program (BCAP), unless approved by the Teacher Education Department Chair.

Foundations

  • TED 407 – Education in a Diverse Society 4 Units Subtotal: 4 Units

Methods

  • TED 425 – Theory and Practice in Mathematics Education 4 Units
  • TED 451 – History/Social Science Education & Integrated Arts 4 Units
  • TED 444 – Theory and Practice in Language Arts Education 4 Units
  • Subtotal: 12 Units

Step 3 of 3: requires its own application

Directed Teaching Block I:

  • TED 427 and TED 440 - Directed Teaching and Performance Assignment 8, 2 Units

(The following courses may be taken before or concurrently with Directed Teaching)

  • TED 551 - Special Populations* 4 Units
  • TED 431 - Theory and Practice in Science Education* 4 Units
  • KIN 441 - (EDU) Elementary School Health Education 3 Units

Block II:

  • TED 429 and TED 441 - Directed Teaching and Performance Assignment 8,2 Units Subtotal: 31Units
    * Courses recommended to be taken prior to Directed Teaching.


Additional Credential Requirements

U.S. Constitution Requirement Completion of a course (with at least two semester units or three quarter units), in provisions and principles of the United States Constitution, OR an equivalent test. High School courses do not satisfy this requirement. See Credential Counselor for course equivalencies.
Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA): Students must have successfully completed the RICA Exam at the time of application for the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. A copy of examination scores must be submitted to the Credential Services Office. Apply online at www.rica.nesinc.com.
