Subject Matter Competency

All students pursuing a credential must demonstrate depth of understanding and knowledge in the subjects to be taught. Those who teach at the elementary school level must document subject matter competency in all the subjects relevant to the elementary classroom (language arts, science, math, social science, arts, physical education and human development). Those who teach at the middle or high school level must document subject matter competency for the subject they are assigned to teach. Subject matter competency may be demonstrated by completing a program of study (Subject Matter Preparation Program) or by passing the relevant subject matter exam(s).

Subject Matter Evaluations
Evaluations can be made for the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Physical Education, Music, Agriculture and Business. In order for Cal Poly Pomona to evaluate transcripts for a Commission-approved Subject Matter Preparation Program, the following criteria must be true::
  •
  • Approval of subject matter competence may be given to California trained individuals only if all or part of the undergraduate or graduate academic or professional preparation was completed at Cal Poly Pomona.
  •
  • Individuals who majored in a subject for which their institution has no approval.
  •
  • Out-of-State trained individuals.
Please contact the Credential Services Office for more information on Subject Matter Competency.
