1. What is Directed Teaching?

Directed teaching is the culmination of the educational foundations, methodology, and field experience components of the teacher education program.

Directed teaching is a cooperative effort between school districts and Cal Poly Pomona University. All students are required to complete two quarters or blocks of directed teaching. Normally, the two blocks will be in different districts.

In the Multiple Subject program, one block will be a primary (K-3) placement and the other block an upper grade (4-6) placement.

In the Single Subject program, one block will be at the middle or junior high school level and the other block at the high school level. Normally, the two blocks will be in different districts. Also, Single Subject student teachers may be required to teach more than one grade level in their content area.  They must teach four periods of subject area.

4. Placement of Student Teachers

The Office of Directed Teaching is responsible for placing all student teachers in cooperating school districts in the Cal Poly Service area. Student teachers do not place themselves.

You will be assigned a university supervisor who will make visits to your school site each week for observation and evaluation of your student teaching.

5. Supervision While Working On an Emergency Credential

The same requirements for directed teaching will apply for those being supervised on an Emergency Credential, with the exception that no cooperating master teacher will be present in the classroom.  A site buddy teacher must be assigned to the Emergency Credential Student Teacher as a mentor.

6. Courtesy Directed Teaching Supervision

If you are on a Long Term Emergency Credential outside of our service area we will not be able to supervise you.
You will be required to complete a Courtesy Supervision Request Form to attach to your Directed Teaching Application requesting supervision from another CSU campus closest to your place of employment.

Remember, this is a courtesy request which means they will only be able to accommodate you if they have adequate supervision.
