Ethnic & Womens Studies Department

Welcome to the Ethnic and Women's Studies Department at Cal Poly Pomona with programs in Gender, Ethnicity, and Multicultural Studies (GEMS).

The Ethnic and Women's Studies Department offers an educational program designed to equip students with the knowledge, analytical skills, and experience necessary to effectively live and work in today's diverse society.

History, culture, and contemporary issues are explored and analyzed through the intersecting perspectives of ethnicity, race, class and gender. The curriculum combines an interdisciplinary knowledge of our socio-cultural world with opportunities in service learning, internships, and community fieldwork.

A degree in GEMS strengthens a students preparation for entry into a variety of occupational fields available with a bachelor's degree: teaching, social work, community organizing, business, counseling, recreation, management, urban and regional planning, and the media.

A GEMS minor provides all career majors with a sophisticated and comprehensive approach to assessing political and social dynamics in an increasing complex society.

Interested in becoming an Elementary Teacher?

One of the best kept secrets in elementary teacher education in Southern California is the GEMS (Gender, Ethnicity and Multicultural Studies) program at Cal Poly Pomona. Students who wish to pursue a multiple subject credential to teach in California can do so by selecting one of three GEMS options (see program).  Courses meet the subject matter and other standards of the CTC and equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to work in California’s diverse classrooms.  Call the Department Chair at 869-2080 or e-mail her at padefreitas@csupomona.edu for more information.
